Archive: January 2014. Google’s research group introduced a prototype contact lens intended to read glucose levels in tears. At the time, Google stressed the work was early-stage research, not an approved blood-glucose monitor. In 2018, Alphabet’s Verily paused the glucose-sensing project because tear measurements did not consistently correlate with blood glucose to a standard suitable for a medical device. Do not use this concept to guide diabetes care. The original Google announcement remains online.
