Photographer Jim Marshall made this photograph of Johnny Cash at San Quentin State Prison in 1969, during a rehearsal before the show. It is not a photograph from the 1968 Folsom Prison performance. Marshall recalled asking Cash for a shot ‘for the warden,’ after which Cash made the gesture toward the camera, according to an account of the photograph.
