Katherine Young is an amateur photographer currently based in London. Having lived on three continents, Katherine has a keen interest in travel and has shot in many parts of the world.

Katherine’s interest in photography started at an early age. Her father recorded countless moments of Katherine’s childhood and together they spent many hours poring over negatives in his darkroom. Katherine purchased her first digital camera in 2006 however, due to work commitments, for many years her photography was limited to holiday snaps. Katherine rekindled her interest in photography after moving to Singapore in 2008 and four years later she acquired her current DSLR, a Nikon D800.

Katherine’s work has evolved dramatically over the last few years. As a self-taught photographer, Katherine began with travel photography, concentrating on urban landscapes and people, aiming to capture the essence of each of the places she has visited. Inspired by the contemporary architecture of Singapore, Katherine focused her attention on cityscapes and architecture, often using HDR photography to emphasise the vibrance and beauty of the city-state. However, Katherine’s real passion is black-and-white photography as she feels that black-and-white images have a surreal and dreamlike quality, which leaves a striking impact on the viewer. Without the distraction of colour, the photograph looks cleaner and reveals the very soul of the subject.

Katherine’s portfolio is diverse but she is particularly attracted to shadows, shapes, lines, curves, reflections, patterns and clouds, which produce images with strong intensity and emotion. Katherine believes that contemporary architecture with its straight lines, dramatic angles and polished surfaces, is particularly suited to her style of photography and enables her to fully express her vision. She is fascinated by the way light illuminates and shadow defines such structures and brings them to life.

A perfectionist, Katherine views her portfolio as a ‘work-in-progress’ and is constantly challenging herself to improve her photography and processing skills.
