On February 23, 1945, Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal photographed a flag raising on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The U.S. National Archives identifies Rosenthal as the photographer and describes the image as one of the most recognized photographs from World War II.
