About ShutYourAperture

ShutYourAperture is the field guide for photographers who want to stop guessing where, when, and how to make better photographs. We map vantage points with GPS coordinates, time them to the light, and put every fee, permit, and lens choice in one place — so you can spend your trip shooting, not researching.

How we build a guide

Every destination on this site is researched against the same checklist before a single word gets written:

  1. Vantage points — 8 to 15 specific locations with GPS coordinates accurate to roughly 10 meters, verified against satellite imagery.
  2. Light timing — golden-hour windows, blue-hour transitions, and seasonal shifts pulled from astronomical data, not guessed.
  3. Lens choices — focal-length recommendations per vantage, written by working photographers who’ve shot the location.
  4. Rules & permits — drone restrictions, tripod permits, religious-site etiquette, and security boundaries verified against official sources.
  5. Transit & access — how to actually get there from the nearest hub, including the practical stuff guidebooks skip.
  6. Sample edits — before/after color science notes so you can finish the photograph at home.

Why we exist

Most “best photo spots” lists on the open web are recycled SEO content written by people who’ve never picked up a camera. Maps are stale. Coordinates are wrong by half a mile. Permit info is years out of date. We built ShutYourAperture because we got tired of arriving at a sunset shoot to find a “secret viewpoint” was actually a construction site.

Our standard: if a photographer walked off the plane with only our guide, they should be able to find every spot, time the light, choose the right lens, and respect the local rules — without a second source.

Who’s behind this

ShutYourAperture is run by Edin Chavez, a photographer with over a decade of commercial, event, and travel work across five continents. The site is published from Miami and Ontario, with field research, GPS verification, and editorial review coordinated across a small team of working photographers who actually shoot the locations we cover.

We monetize through three honest channels: field-tested PDF guides and Lightroom preset packs sold directly on this site, an affiliate relationship with B&H Photo and Amazon for gear recommendations, and a curated affiliate partnership with Viator for guided photography tours. We never recommend a product we haven’t shot with, edited with, or booked ourselves.
