Macro photography brings small details into view, from an insect’s eyes to patterns in a leaf. A close-up photograph is not always true 1:1 macro: at 1:1 magnification, the subject is recorded at life size on the camera sensor.
Magnification and working distance
A macro lens can focus close enough for high magnification. Check the lens’s maximum magnification and its working distance, the space between the subject and the front of the lens. More working distance can help with insects that move away when approached. Focal length alone does not guarantee more magnification.
Keep the subject in focus
At close distances, depth of field becomes thin. Stop down when more of the subject needs to be sharp, but balance that against light and shutter speed. Try positioning the camera so the important details lie near the same focus plane.

Try focus stacking for still subjects
Make several frames focused at slightly different distances, then combine them in editing software. The camera and subject should stay still between frames. Stacking is harder with moving insects, so a single well-timed frame may work better.
Keep practicing on easy subjects before approaching insects. The gallery below shows a frog, a lizard, a fly and a ladybug. The fly photograph retains its on-page credit to Daan olde hanter.
SaveKeep your close-up originals and finished files
A black Samsung T7 Shield portable SSD, 1TB model MU-PE1T0S/AM, is one storage option for your close-up originals and finished files. Check capacity and your computer connection before buying. Open the copied files and maintain another checked copy separately. This is a file-storage link, not a claim about magnification, focus stacking or image quality. A drive does not replace a complete backup plan. Compare the current retailer specifications; no hands-on test, price or stock promise is being made here.
