In January 2014, photographs by Thomas Zakowski of ice-covered lighthouses along Lake Michigan drew wide attention. The images below show the structures and walkways buried under winter ice. A contemporary MLive interview said Zakowski had made the images over several winters, including at St. Joseph and South Haven; they were not all taken during one day’s cold snap.
Zakowski described how much preparation and practice went into the photographs. The same report warned that the ice-covered shoreline could be dangerous, so these photographs are not an invitation to walk onto frozen piers. See more of Thomas Zakowski’s work.
