Wild Flowers by Jim Shirey. My family and I moved into the old farmhouse almost forty years ago. In the years following we grew gardens, raised fruit trees and hiked through the wildlife area adjoining our property. Our boys grew into strong men and went their ways, leaving us with the memory of the natural world we shared as a family. That included the wildflowers growing in odd places; some so tiny they could fit on a pinky nail, others gone within a few days, leaving no trace after their blossoms fall. For the past ten years I have been capturing their stories in the field at the times of day when the air falls still and the light is gentle. We carry around our fancy equipment and run our image files through hi-tech software. But all that only helps to tell these stories. Were it not for the patience and love that we give as artists, there would be no stories to tell. These are the virtues I have learned squatting for hours among the blossoms. They seem like friends.
