Best Time to Shoot
Sunset is the classic window. Arrive by 90 minutes before sunset to secure a shooting position on the rim. Sunrise offers softer light and almost no other visitors, but the arch faces east so the La Sals catch alpenglow while the arch itself remains in shade. How to Get There
From Moab, take US-191 north to UT-279, then follow signs to Wolfe Ranch trailhead. Arches requires timed entry permits from April through October ($2 per vehicle reservation fee on top of park entry) — reserve at recreation.gov. The hike involves exposed slickrock; wear trail shoes.
Camera Settings
At sunset the arch glows against a bright sky. A 2-stop soft-edge graduated ND helps balance exposure without blurring the arch edge. Shoot f/8-f/11 for full depth of field. ISO 100-200. Bracket for the last 15 minutes of light when color peaks but levels drop fast.
