SmugMug pricing is easiest to understand when you separate three decisions: hosting and delivery, selling at a profit, and managing more complicated client sales. The current public plans are Direct, Portfolio and Pro, with Enterprise available by inquiry. Basic and Power still appear in some older help articles, but they are not the current public signup ladder shown on the plans page checked for this guide.

For a photographer who needs storage and straightforward delivery, start by checking Direct. For a portfolio with print or digital-download profit, compare Portfolio. Pro is worth considering when multiple pricelists, coupons, packages, client favoriting or tighter download controls solve a real business problem. Your job title alone does not decide the plan.

Updated October 2026. Prices and plan features were checked against SmugMug’s own pricing page and support documentation on October 1, 2026. This is a source-led buying guide, not a claim of personal long-term use or a hands-on comparison. The photographs are Edin Chavez’s own work, included to illustrate the kinds of images a portfolio may need to display. They are not SmugMug interface screenshots.

SmugMug Prices: Monthly Billing Versus Annual Billing

The official SmugMug plans page shows the following USD rates. Its annual option is displayed as a monthly equivalent billed annually, not a month-to-month payment at that lower rate. Annual totals below are calculated by multiplying that displayed equivalent by twelve. They are planning figures before any applicable tax, add-ons or checkout adjustments, not a quote for your account.

Direct

Monthly billing: $29.00 per month. Annual billing: $20.00 per month equivalent, calculated as $240.00 for twelve months. Twelve months of the monthly rate would total $348.00, so the annual-rate difference is $108.00 before tax and add-ons. Verify the actual charge and renewal amount on the subscription screen before paying.

Portfolio

Monthly billing: $35.50 per month. Annual billing: $23.50 per month equivalent, calculated as $282.00 for twelve months. Twelve months of the monthly rate would total $426.00, so the annual-rate difference is $144.00 before tax and add-ons. Verify the actual charge and renewal amount on the subscription screen before paying.

Pro

Monthly billing: $52.00 per month. Annual billing: $37.00 per month equivalent, calculated as $444.00 for twelve months. Twelve months of the monthly rate would total $624.00, so the annual-rate difference is $180.00 before tax and add-ons. Verify the actual charge and renewal amount on the subscription screen before paying.

Enterprise is described as a tailored option for serious volume and specialized needs, including studios, teams and institutions. No public flat rate is listed. Ask SmugMug for the scope and price rather than treating Enterprise as a fourth fixed-price consumer tier.

Do not compare an annual monthly-equivalent number with a competitor’s true monthly bill without saying which is which. A $37 annual-equivalent Pro rate and a $52 monthly Pro rate are both current numbers, but they represent different commitments. An annual subscription can reduce the twelve-month cost if the service fits; monthly billing may be more sensible while you are still evaluating a paid workflow. A cheaper annual rate does not make the larger upfront commitment risk-free.

Direct: Start Here for Hosting and Straightforward Delivery

Direct’s headline features include unlimited storage, privacy controls, digital delivery, Lightroom integration and human support. The comparison grid specifies unlimited full-resolution JPEG storage. That makes Direct a candidate for photographers who want a place to organize finished pictures and deliver them without needing to set profitable print or download prices.

The important distinction is profit, not whether a visitor can see a shopping cart. SmugMug’s comparison grid describes Direct’s print-lab and cart access as not for profit, and its selling guide says Direct cannot set prices or earn profit. If you need your own markups, do not assume a visible purchase button means Direct has the commercial tools you need.

Before choosing it, make a short list of what delivery means for your work. Do you need a customer to download finished JPEGs? Do you need customers to mark favorites and limit how many files they receive? Are you presenting one public portfolio or separate private projects? Direct may cover the simpler version, while particular client controls can push you toward Pro. Check the exact feature row instead of buying the highest plan because you do paid photography.

Branding is another separate decision. The specialist CustomSmug plan comparison lists custom-domain connection for Portfolio and Pro, not Direct. If using your own domain is a requirement, confirm that entitlement on the current subscription screen and budget for any domain registration or renewal outside the subscription. Do not budget from an old Power-plan recommendation and assume that option will appear at signup.

Portfolio: The Entry Point for Profit-Making Sales

Portfolio adds print and digital-download sales, professional website templates, watermark tools, control of profit margins and offered print products, and order fulfillment. For a photographer selling a consistent group of prints or finished digital files, this is the first current public tier to examine. It is not necessary to assume that every small photography business needs Pro.

Work backward from a real sale. Write down the product, base cost, intended selling price and what the customer should receive. Confirm whether the lab, paper, size and shipping route suit your customers before building your entire portfolio around that product. A subscription rate is only part of the cost of selling a physical print; fulfillment choices and the customer’s destination still matter.

SmugMug’s selling guide explains that buyers select shipping and pay shipping costs plus applicable taxes. Prints ship from the United States or the UK depending on the chosen lab. International buyers should check the available shipping quote for their destination. Do not promise worldwide delivery at one flat cost or make a print price sound like an all-in delivered total.

Watermarks and display controls can discourage casual misuse, but they do not make a public image impossible to copy. Keep public display size, downloads, shopping and privacy settings separate in your review. A watermark should not be the only barrier protecting a private client session. Publish only images you have the right to display, with the client agreement and intended audience in mind.

For an additional design-focused comparison, CustomSmug’s plan guide separates homepage customization, custom CSS/HTML and domain connection. Treat it as a specialist guide, not the seller’s final quote; SmugMug’s current plan and subscription screens control your purchase.

Pro: Pay for Specific Controls, Not the Word Professional

Pro adds multiple custom pricelists, marketing coupons and packages, client favoriting, and customer download limits to Portfolio’s features. Those are useful distinctions when different galleries need different prices or clients need a structured selection and delivery process. They are reasons to compare Pro, not proof that the lower tier cannot serve any paid photographer.

One common reason to need multiple pricelists is a business with separate products or audiences. A fine-art print collection and an event gallery may need different products, sizes and pricing. Another is a client who has paid for a defined number of downloads rather than an unrestricted gallery. Map the requirement to the current Pro feature before assuming you can recreate it with a lower-tier setting.

At the annual-equivalent rates, Pro costs a calculated $162 more per year than Portfolio. At monthly rates the difference is $16.50 per month. Use that difference as a decision prompt: what task does Pro remove, and how often do you need it? If none of its extra controls matters, paying for the name alone has little value. If a missing control would force manual corrections on every job, the lower subscription may not be the cheaper workflow.

Do not put real clients through an unfinished experiment. First document the intended gallery settings, download allowance and product choices, then test the configuration in a controlled setting once sharing is available. The trial has its own sharing limits, so an internal setup review and a paid end-to-end customer check are not the same test.

Selling Fees: You Keep 85% of the Markup, Not the Sale Price

SmugMug’s profit-payment documentation says your print profit is 85% of the difference between your selling price and SmugMug’s default print price. Its retained 15% includes credit-card payment fees, customer service and administration of the program. This is not a claim that you keep 85% of the customer’s entire checkout payment.

For a simple hypothetical example, a $30 selling price with a $10 base price leaves a $20 markup. Eighty-five percent of that markup is $17. That $17 is the platform-calculated profit in the example, not your final business profit after the subscription, your labor or other expenses. Shipping and taxes should not be folded into your margin as though they were income you keep.

Digital downloads also have a base cost. The current support page lists $0.49 for an individual file and $1.99 for a gallery download to cover processing and delivery. Download profit is 85% of the price above that base cost. The download-selling guide also distinguishes paid sales from free downloads, coupons and Pro client downloads. Pick the correct route for what the client already purchased.

A quick budget exercise helps more than a vague promise that sales will cover the subscription. Using the $17 hypothetical profit, a $282 annual Portfolio subscription would require seventeen comparable sales to exceed the subscription alone. That calculation says nothing about whether those sales will happen. Add your other costs and use actual sales records before deciding the platform pays for itself.

RAW Storage Is a Separate Subscription

Unlimited JPEG storage is not unlimited RAW storage included in every plan. SmugMug Source is a separately billed add-on for RAW files. The Source billing documentation, updated April 13, 2026, lists a $10 monthly minimum for up to 1 TB, plus $6 per month for each additional TB. Tax or VAT applies where required.

Source needs an existing SmugMug subscription and creates a second bill. At the first storage tier, twelve months of Source adds a calculated $120 before tax to your base plan. For example, Portfolio at the displayed annual equivalent plus a year of first-tier Source comes to a planning total of $402 before tax. Your actual usage and checkout determine the amount you pay.

RAW files in Source are not offered for sale. Support warns that their display JPEGs can be available for purchase when shopping is turned on. Review that setting rather than assuming that storing RAW files means none of the related images can appear in the shop. Archiving, display and selling need their own checks.

Keep independent copies of the originals and the final exports. A hosted gallery is part of a delivery workflow, not a reason to delete your only local archive. Our photo-storage guide covers that wider decision. Before migrating a large archive, check the recovery process as carefully as the upload process.

The 14-Day Trial Has an Important Sharing Limit

SmugMug offers a 14-day free trial. Its terms say payment information is not required for the trial and the trial account ends unless you elect to continue with a plan and provide payment information. Do not describe the trial as automatically converting to monthly billing by default.

There is a limit that matters for a client-delivery test: the subscription guide says a trial site is completely private and image or gallery sharing is unavailable until you subscribe. Most features can be explored, but not every feature remains on every paid plan. A successful trial setup does not prove that your chosen lower tier includes all the controls you saw.

Use the trial to upload a representative selection, organize galleries, review the editor and compare the features you intend to keep. Include horizontal, vertical, low-light and detailed images in that set. Check exports on both a laptop and a phone. Examine whether the portfolio structure makes your strongest work easy to find, rather than uploading every photograph you have ever made.

For editing and export decisions, start with the Lightroom guide. If you also need a field reference before the next shoot, the shutter-speed guide and free chart are useful preparation. Neither replaces a service-specific test of privacy, purchasing or file delivery. Subscribe only when the features and commitment fit your intended workflow, then verify the customer-facing path before sending a live client gallery.

Renewal, Cancellation and Downgrading

The subscription guide says paid plans renew automatically, whether monthly or annual, and are charged immediately in USD when you subscribe. Check the renewal date and price before paying. An annual-equivalent headline is not permission to assume that billing stops after twelve months.

Read the current subscription terms before relying on a refund. Their subscription section states that fees are nonrefundable and that cancellation or termination can end access upon confirmation, even with time remaining. Statutory rights may apply in your jurisdiction; this summary is not legal advice. Do not budget around an unconditional fourteen-day paid-plan refund promise.

Before closing an account, download what you need and verify those copies. SmugMug’s cancellation help says subscriptions originally started through the iOS app need cancellation through the Apple account. Ending Source is separate from ending the base account. Follow the instructions for the subscription route you actually used.

Downgrading also deserves a review. The plan-change guide warns about losing features, removal of watermarks on Direct, deletion of pricelists and assistant-password changes when leaving selling plans. It recommends disabling visitor shopping before downgrading to avoid at-cost sales. Save your settings and check the result rather than treating a cheaper plan as a harmless billing switch.

Questions and Answers

Which SmugMug plan is cheapest for a new account?

Direct is the lowest-priced current public signup plan. The checked page lists $29 monthly or $20 per month equivalent billed annually. Basic and Power references in older articles should not be treated as current signup offers.

Do I need Pro for paid photography?

Not automatically. Portfolio supports profit-making print and digital sales. Compare Pro when you need its multiple pricelists, coupons, packages, client favoriting or download limits. Decide from the required controls, not your job title.

Is RAW storage included?

No. Source is a separately billed add-on requiring a SmugMug subscription. Its first tier is $10 monthly up to 1 TB, with $6 monthly for each additional TB. Keep the RAW budget separate from the JPEG-hosting plan.

Does SmugMug take 15% of all my sales?

The documented profit calculation gives you 85% of the markup above the base print or download cost. That differs from retaining 85% of the whole sale. Read the base cost before setting a profitable selling price.

Can I share galleries during the free trial?

The current subscription documentation says the trial site is private and gallery or image sharing is unavailable until you subscribe. Use it for setup and feature review, not as a promised live client-delivery trial.

Can I use my own domain?

The specialist CustomSmug plan comparison lists custom-domain connection on Portfolio and Pro, not Direct. Confirm the current entitlement with SmugMug, budget domain registration separately and verify the connection instructions before changing a live domain.

Is annual billing always the best choice?

It has the lower calculated twelve-month cost at the checked rates, but a larger commitment. Consider whether the platform fits, what add-ons you need and what the current cancellation terms say. The lower equivalent rate is not a monthly payment.

Where should I start?

Open the official plans page, choose the feature set you actually need and use the free trial for a controlled setup review. Verify the final price, billing frequency, renewal and required customer controls before paying.

Compare the official SmugMug plans page and its linked free-trial route directly. No discount, future stock-like availability promise or personal testing claim is implied by this recommendation. Prices can change after this check; the service’s current subscription screen controls your purchase.

Gallery-Prep Gear Box: Keep an Independent Working Copy

No new camera or lens is required to choose a hosting plan. If you need a portable working copy of exports before uploading, the black Samsung T7 Shield 2TB is one option to compare at Amazon or B&H. Check the exact capacity, computer connection and current retailer price. One portable drive is not a complete backup system and buying it does not improve a gallery’s privacy or sales features.
