Vernal Falls drops 317 feet into the Merced River gorge on the Mist Trail in Yosemite Valley. At peak snowmelt — typically May through early June — the spray radius extends well beyond the footbridge, soaking any unprotected camera. That same mist creates rainbows on bright mornings that arc across the face of the falls, which is the shot most photographers are actually chasing.
Best Time to Shoot
Late May and early June for maximum flow and rainbow potential. Rainbows appear mid-morning when the sun is at the right angle east of the falls. Arrive at the trailhead by 7 a.m. to reach the footbridge before the crowds fill in. Low-flow periods in late summer still produce a pleasant waterfall but lack the spray drama.
How to Get There
The Mist Trail begins at the Happy Isles trailhead in Yosemite Valley. Yosemite requires timed entry reservations from May through September — reserve at recreation.gov. The footbridge view is 1.5 miles in with 1,000 feet of gain. Water shoes or trail runners with traction are essential on wet granite.
Camera Settings
Protect your lens with a rain sleeve and carry multiple microfiber cloths. Shoot at 1/4 to 1/2 second for silky water at f/11, ISO 100. For the rainbow shot you need direct sun — overcast kills it. A circular polarizer at 45 degrees to the rainbow preserves rather than removes it.

Common Mistakes
- Bringing a non-weather-sealed camera without a dry bag — the mist will soak it completely.
- Shooting at 1/1000 second: the falls look frozen and lifeless. Slow down.
- Arriving on a cloudy day expecting rainbows.
- Ignoring the river pools below the bridge, which make strong foreground elements for a wider composition.
