Cloud Gate — better known as the Bean — is Anish Kapoor’s 110-ton reflective steel sculpture in Millennium Park. The seamless polished surface reflects and distorts the surrounding skyline in ways that exist nowhere else. The omphalos, the concave tunnel underneath, gives an infinite-regression reflection effect that no other sculpture in the world replicates.
Best Time to Shoot
Sunrise is the best time. The park gates open at 6 a.m. In the first 20-30 minutes the plaza is nearly empty, the eastern sky colors reflect across the full surface, and the Chicago skyline is lit in warm light. In winter the Bean reflects snow on the surrounding lawn and the city simultaneously.
How to Get There
Millennium Park is on Michigan Avenue between Randolph and Monroe Streets in the Loop. Accessible via CTA Red Line to Lake or Monroe stations. No fees or permits for personal photography. Tripods are permitted. The omphalos is on the south side of the sculpture.
Camera Settings
Wide angle (14-20mm) for the full skyline reflection sweep. f/8-f/11 for sharpness across the curved surface. ISO 100-400 depending on light. For the omphalos tunnel: shoot straight up at f/11 with a 16mm — the recursive reflection requires maximum depth of field. Bracket for the sky reflection vs the darker street level below.

Common Mistakes
- Arriving at midday when the plaza is at peak crowd and harsh overhead sun creates hot spots on the surface.
- Not exploring the omphalos underneath — it is the most unusual shot and most visitors miss it.
- Using a polarizer: it removes the reflection that makes the sculpture interesting.
- Shooting only in landscape orientation — the tall Chicago skyline reflected in the surface often works better in portrait orientation.
