Boston Skyline from Charlestown: Photography Guide

The Charlestown Navy Yard gives an unobstructed north-shore view of the Boston skyline across the Inner Harbor. The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is visible to the left, the downtown towers to the center-right, and harbor watercraft in the foreground. It is the strongest blue-hour skyline shot in New England and requires less planning than most equivalent city views.

Best Time to Shoot

Blue hour after sunset, year-round. The Zakim Bridge cable lights turn on at dusk. Summer gives a longer window and warm air; winter gives a shorter window but the cold air clarifies the atmosphere so the skyline renders sharper. How to Get There

The Charlestown Navy Yard is accessible via the MBTA Ferry from Long Wharf in downtown Boston or via MBTA Orange Line to Community College with a 10-minute walk. The pier at Pier 4 and Constitution Wharf offer the best unobstructed views. No fees.

24-35mm for the full skyline sweep; 70-200mm to isolate the Zakim Bridge against the skyline. At blue hour: ISO 200-800, f/8-f/11, 2-15 seconds on a tripod. The harbor water reflects the building lights — expose to keep the reflections without blowing the windows.

Common Mistakes
