Film photography produces a specific quality of image that digital cameras technically outperform in almost every measurable way and yet photographers keep chasing. Grain that looks natural rather than digital, shadow tones that fade to gray rather than black, colors that shift in characteristic ways under different light. These are aesthetic qualities, not technical shortcomings, and they carry an emotional weight that clean digital rendering does not automatically produce.
Creating a convincing film look in Lightroom requires understanding which specific attributes of analog film you are trying to replicate. The answer is not “add grain”, though grain is part of it. It involves tone curve characteristics, color science adjustments, and a specific approach to how shadows and highlights behave. This guide covers the full process.
What Makes Film Look Like Film
Several characteristics distinguish analog film from digital capture, and each one can be approximated in Lightroom:
- Shadow lift: Film does not go to absolute black. The toe of the characteristic curve lifts shadows to a mid-gray rather than zero, producing a faded, airy look in darker areas.
- Highlight rolloff: Film highlights compress gently rather than clipping hard. Overexposed areas transition smoothly to white rather than suddenly blocking up.
- Color shifts by exposure level: Different film stocks shift color differently in shadows versus highlights. Kodak Portra 400 shifts toward warm orange in the highlights. Fujifilm Velvia shifts toward saturated blues and greens. These per-tonal-range shifts are the most characteristic aspect of specific film stocks.
- Grain structure: Film grain is random and organic, larger in shadows than highlights, and luminance-based rather than color-based in most emulsions. Digital noise tends to look uniform and has more color component.
Building the Tone Curve Foundation
The tone curve is the most critical element of a film look preset. Start with the Point Curve in Lightroom (Tone Curve panel, then click Point Curve in the dropdown). You need to make two characteristic adjustments:
Lifting the shadows (the fade)
Click on the bottom-left point of the curve (pure black, input 0 output 0) and drag it upward. Moving it to approximately output 25-40 prevents the image from ever reaching pure black, creating the characteristic lifted shadow look of color negative film. The exact amount depends on the specific look you want: a stronger lift (output 35-40) creates an obvious faded aesthetic. A subtle lift (output 20-25) is less immediately obvious but gives a quality that reads as organic rather than clinically digital.
The S-curve and highlight rolloff
After lifting the shadow floor, add a gentle S-curve to restore midtone contrast: add a point around input 75, output 70 (slight pull-down in shadows/midtones) and a point around input 190, output 200 (slight push in upper midtones). Then adjust the top-right point: move it down slightly, from input 255 output 255 to approximately input 240, output 250. This creates gentle highlight compression rather than a hard clip.
Per-Channel Color Curves for Film Stock Matching
Film stock color science comes from per-channel tone curves. Switch the Tone Curve panel to individual channels (Red, Green, Blue) and make the following adjustments for a warm color negative look (approximating Kodak Portra):
Red channel: slight lift in shadows (bottom point up to output 15) and a small boost in the upper midtones (add point around input 200, output 208). This warms shadows and highlights.
Green channel: minimal adjustment, perhaps a very slight S-curve for slight midtone contrast. Green channel adjustments shift the image toward magenta (negative) or green (positive), so handle carefully.
Blue channel: pull the shadow floor down slightly (move bottom-left point downward to output -10 to -15) and pull the highlights down (top-right point to output 240). This adds yellow in the shadows and keeps highlights from reading too blue. The result is the characteristic warmth in highlights and slight desaturation in shadows that Portra is known for.
For a cooler, more muted look (approximating Kodak Ektar or Fuji Pro 400H), reverse the red channel adjustment and instead boost blue channel in the shadows.
HSL Adjustments for Film Color Accuracy
Film stocks have characteristic color rendering that the HSL panel can help approximate. For Kodak Portra-style skin tones: shift orange hue slightly toward red (+5 to +8), reduce orange saturation by -10, and raise orange luminance by +10. This gives skin tones the warm, slightly desaturated quality Portra is famous for. For portrait photography, these adjustments alone can significantly change the feel of the image.
For Fuji Velvia-style landscape rendering: boost green saturation (+20), shift green hue toward yellow (-5), boost blue saturation (+15), and shift blue hue slightly toward cyan (-8). This creates the punchy, slightly unreal color saturation that Velvia slides were known for in landscape photography.
For a monochrome film look matching Ilford HP5 or Tri-X, convert to black and white (HSL panel > all saturation to zero, or use the Black and White panel) and then add luminance weighting to individual channels to match the way those films responded to color: HP5 renders red tones slightly darker than neutral and blue tones slightly lighter. Adjust the B&W mix accordingly.
Adding Film Grain
Lightroom’s grain controls are in the Effects panel. The three parameters are Amount, Size, and Roughness. For a film emulation that matches a specific stock, the relationships between these matter more than the absolute values:
- Fine-grain stocks (ISO 100-400 equivalents): Amount 20-35, Size 25-35, Roughness 40-55
- Medium-grain stocks (ISO 400-800 equivalents): Amount 35-50, Size 35-45, Roughness 50-65
- Push-processed or high-speed stocks (ISO 1600+): Amount 55-80, Size 45-60, Roughness 60-75
Roughness controls how uniform the grain pattern is: lower values produce a more regular pattern, higher values produce more variation in grain size and distribution, which is closer to what actual film grain looks like. Higher roughness is almost always more authentic.
Saving and Applying as a Preset
Once you have the film look dialed in across tone curves, per-channel curves, HSL, and grain, save it as a Lightroom preset. Include all four panel adjustments in the preset: Tone Curve, White Balance (if your film look involves a specific temperature), HSL, and Effects (grain). Save separate presets for different film stock references rather than one generic “film” preset: named presets like “Portra 400 Warm” and “HP5 Push” are much more useful during editing than a single catch-all.
For street photography, a high-grain black and white preset based on Tri-X characteristics is practically a standard tool in the genre, and many photographers develop their own version of it that becomes part of their recognizable visual style.
The best film emulations are not technically accurate recreations. They borrow the qualities that made each film stock aesthetically interesting and apply them to digital files in ways that read as organic and intentional rather than filtered. Getting there takes experimentation with the specific tools above, but the results are worth the time.
