Vessel is a 16-story honeycomb staircase structure in the Hudson Yards plaza, designed by Thomas Heatherwick. The 154 interconnected staircases and 80 landings create a recursive, geometric interior that rewards a wide-angle lens pointed straight up. The exterior reflects the surrounding glass towers and the Hudson River in its copper-bronze panels.

How to Get There
Hudson Yards is accessible via the 7 subway line to 34th Street-Hudson Yards. The Vessel is in the central plaza at 20 Hudson Yards. Note: as of recent years the Vessel has been closed to climbing — the exterior and plaza remain accessible for photography. Check the official site for current interior access status before visiting.
Camera Settings
Exterior: 24-50mm, f/8, ISO 100 in daylight. Interior (if open): 16mm straight up for the recursive staircase shot, f/8-f/11, ISO 400-800. The reflective bronze panels fool standard metering — use spot metering or manual. For the plaza-level exterior: crouch low for a foreground-heavy composition.

Common Mistakes
- Shooting only from eye level: the Vessel’s geometry is maximally interesting from very low or very high angles.
- Using a polarizer on the reflective panels: it kills the mirror effect that makes the structure visually interesting.
- Visiting only at midday in direct sun: harsh reflections from the panels create uncontrollable hot spots.
- Forgetting to check whether the interior is currently accessible before making the trip.
