The Painted Ladies are seven Victorian houses on the east side of Alamo Square Park. The photograph everyone recognizes shows the Victorian facades in the foreground and the downtown San Francisco skyline — Salesforce Tower, the Transamerica Pyramid — rising behind the gingerbread trim. The challenge is that this is one of the busiest tourist spots in the city.
Best Time to Shoot
Weekday mornings from 7-9 a.m. before the park fills. Morning light from the east hits the Victorian facades directly and illuminates the color detail. How to Get There
Alamo Square Park is on Hayes Street between Scott and Steiner, accessible by the 21-Hayes bus line or a walk from the Castro or Civic Center neighborhoods. No fees or permits. The classic shooting position is on the upper lawn, roughly centered on Steiner Street.
Camera Settings
50-85mm captures the houses against the skyline without excessive wide-angle distortion. f/8, ISO 100-400 depending on light. The houses face east, so morning light is your ally. Apply perspective correction in post if the verticals are converging.

Common Mistakes
- Using an ultra-wide lens at 16mm: the houses distort and the skyline shrinks.
- Arriving expecting no other visitors: even at 7 a.m. on weekdays there are other photographers.
- Not including the skyline: without the downtown context, these are just colorful buildings.
- Shooting at f/2.8 with only the front house sharp and the other six out of focus.
