Vizcaya is a 1916 Italian Renaissance villa on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, surrounded by formal European gardens and a breakwater in the shape of a stone barge. The combination of the villa facade, the manicured garden geometry, and the bay in the background is the closest thing to an Italian lakeside estate that exists in the continental United States.
Best Time to Shoot
Morning visits from 9:30-11 a.m. when the east-facing garden is lit from behind you and the villa facade catches direct light. Weekday mornings in the off-season (May-November) have minimal crowds. The bay view from the East Loggia is best in late afternoon.
How to Get There
3251 S. Miami Avenue, Coconut Grove. Open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Tuesdays. Admission $22 for adults. Interior photography is allowed in open rooms without flash. Tripods require advance coordination with the estates office.
Camera Settings
Garden formal geometry: 24-35mm, f/11-f/16 for full depth of the garden axes. Villa facade from the garden: 50-85mm to avoid ultra-wide distortion of the architecture. Stone barge on the bay: 70-200mm from the bayfront balcony. Interior rooms: ISO 1600-3200, f/2.8-f/4 without flash, using window light.

Common Mistakes
- Arriving in full midday sun expecting the garden to be photogenic: formal geometry requires directional side light.
- Photographing interiors with flash — prohibited.
- Missing the stone barge: most first-time visitors photograph only the main garden and miss the bayfront entirely.
- Shooting during a special event when sections of the garden are closed.
