Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest in the world, with a diameter of 370 feet. The concentric color rings — deep blue at the center transitioning through green, yellow, orange, and red at the outer edges — come from heat-tolerant bacteria at different temperature zones. The aerial view showing the full ring pattern requires hiking to the Fairy Falls overlook, not the boardwalk.

Best Time to Shoot

Midday in summer when the sun is nearly overhead and illuminates the full color spectrum of the rings. Cloudy days mute the colors significantly. Wind direction matters: when the steam blows toward you on the boardwalk, visibility drops to near zero.

How to Get There

The Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk is on Grand Loop Road, 4.5 miles north of Old Faithful. For the Fairy Falls overlook, park at the Fairy Falls trailhead on the west side of Grand Loop Road and hike 1.6 miles to the base of Fairy Falls, then scramble 200 feet up the unmarked trail to the overlook. Standard park entry required.

Camera Settings

From the overlook: 24-50mm for the full spring context with the surrounding geyser basin and forest; 70-200mm to fill the frame with the spring color rings. ISO 100, f/8-f/11. Polarizer helps reduce glare off the water surface. From the boardwalk: 16-24mm looking down at the edge of the spring, ISO 200-400 to handle steam haze.

Common Mistakes

  • Shooting only from the boardwalk and thinking you have the Grand Prismatic shot — the overlook view is completely different.
  • Visiting on overcast days expecting color: the rings go pastel gray without direct sun.
  • Using a telephoto only at the overlook and missing the wide-angle forest-plus-spring context.
  • Not checking wind forecast: the geyser steam blows toward the overlook on north winds and obscures the view.
